About Us
Growing up is tough.
Growing up a step behind everyone else your age - through no fault of your own is tougher. Over fifty two years ago, the Achievement Academy was founded by a special group of parents and teachers who understood. Today Achievement Academy is a non-profit United Way agency and charter school. We serve children from birth through age six who have developmental delays of disabilities. It’s a caring, family-friendly atmosphere that makes a difference in learning and in life.
What is a developmental delay?
A developmental delay is when a child doesn’t reach certain physical and/or mental "check points" along with his peers. For example, experts tell us that children should have a vocabulary of around 200 words by age two. If they do not, it’s a signal that there may be a problem - and early intervention can make all the difference.
Developmental delays can happen to any child, for a myriad of reason from prematurity to social/emotional issues or genetic causes. But delays are not always permanent. If you or your pediatrician thinks your child might be at risk for developmental delays or has already started sliding, the Achievement Academy can help.
